Conservation easements, simply explained.

One legal tool can change what may happen to land without changing who owns it.

The basic idea

A conservation easement is a legally enforceable agreement between a landowner and an easement holder. The landowner can retain ownership while giving up specified development rights.

Why monitoring matters

An easement is meaningful because its terms are intended to be respected over time. Community reporting says YLC board members inspect and photograph its protected Park Hill lots annually.

What it does not mean

An easement does not automatically mean that a property is open to the public. Access depends on the specific property and agreement.
